KETV and an infectious disease doctor talk about COVID-19 “Scrabble” variants

COVID-19 REMAINS DESPITE THE RETURN TO A RATHER NORMAL LIFE. YOU MAY HEAR ABOUT THE HIGH-SCORING LETTERS KNOWN SCRAMBLING VARIANTS IN THE GAME. SCRABBLE. WELL, JOIN US NOW TO TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IS DR. DAVID QUIMBY WITH HEALTH. DR. QUIMBY, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. THANK YOU FOR. AND DR. FIRST, LET’S TALK ABOUT THESE VARIANTS. ARE THEY PROMINENT? DO THEY HAVE DIFFERENT SYMPTOMS THAN OMICRON OR ORIGINAL STRAINS? THIS IS SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT THAN THE ORIGINAL STRAINS BECAUSE, LIKE ALL OMICRON STRAINS, THE CHANCE OF BEING HOSPITALIZED, A SERIOUS ILLNESS SEEMS TO BE A LITTLE LESS. WHETHER IT IS DUE TO IMMUNITY, THE VIRUS ITSELF PORTS VACCINED, ALL OF IT PROBABLY PLAYS A ROLE, THE NEW THINGS TENDENCY TO CAUSE MORE SORE THROAT THAN THE ORIGINAL VIRUS WHICH HAS BACKED UP, BUT THEY CAN STILL CAUSE RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS. OTHERWISE, THEY ACT A LITTLE LIKE BROWNS. THERE ARE HONESTLY WAY TOO MANY OF THESE DIFFERENT VARIANTS TO EASILY KEEP TRACK, AND THEY ALL ACT CLINICALLY ABOUT THE SAME BECAUSE EVEN IF THEY COME FROM DIFFERENT ANCESTORS, THEY KINDLY MUTATE ALONG THE SAME PATH. SO THEY ARE QUITE SIMILAR. AND IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD THEY ARE INCREASING COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS OMICRON. AND WE’RE STARTING TO SEE THAT INCREASE HERE TOO. DOCTOR OF CLINICAL ACT. THE SAME. DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE VACCINE RESPONDS THE SAME? WILL IT WORK AGAINST THESE VARIANTS? WHAT THEY HAVE FOUND SO FAR IS PEOPLE GETTING BOOSTERS OR THE BIVALENT BOOSTER ARM. THEY ALWAYS HAVE GOOD HOSPITAL PROTECTION. IF YOU GET SICK. WE ALSO HAVE OTHER TREATMENTS TO HELP KEEP PEOPLE OUT OF HOSPITAL, THAT THE NEW BOOSTER IS TARGETED, SPECIFICALLY AT THESE PEOPLE, NOT SO MUCH BECAUSE THEY ARE NEWER. AND AFTER THE RECALLS HAVE BEEN MADE BUT VACCINATION AND BOOST ALWAYS HELPS PREVENT SEVERE INFECTION AGAINST THESE GUYS. DOCTOR, WE HEAR A LITTLE ABOUT THE TRIPLE DYNAMICS OR COMBINATION OF RSV, FLU AND COVID THAT ARE FINDING PEOPLE RIGHT NOW. HOW SHOULD WE KEEP OUR HEALTH? THE SAME THING, HONESTLY, PEOPLE HAVE DONE TO KEEP THEMSELVES HEALTHY ALL THEIR LIVES. IF YOU ARE SICK, DON’T BE WITH OTHER PEOPLE. WASH YOUR HANDS. IF YOU ARE IN FREQUENT AREAS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A WEAK OR AT RISK IMMUNE SYSTEM OR WEAR A MASK IF APPROPRIATE. RSV AND INFLUENZA ARE ACTUALLY BEGINNING TO INCREASE AGAIN THIS YEAR. THE 2020 FLU SEASON WAS basically non-existent because everyone was in isolation. SO WE STARTED HAVING A RETURN LAST YEAR AND IT’S ALREADY ON THE INCREASE THIS YEAR. THERE IS NO VACCINE AGAINST RSV CURRENTLY. IT IS COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE. THERE IS FOR THE FLU, WHICH CAN HELP PREVENT SEVERE INFECTIONS. IF YOU HAVE THIS. SO GET A FLU VACCINE IF YOU ARE A CANDIDATE AND TRY TO KEEP RSV AWAY FROM SMALL CHILDREN AS IT CAN CAUSE SOME SERIOUS TO DOCTORS. SO GREAT INFORMATION. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS UPDATE AS WE ENTER THE
