New Delhi:

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today married Gurpreet Kaur, a 32-year-old doctor, in a simple private ceremony at his home in Chandigarh.

Bhagwant Mann and Gurpreet Kaur, dressed in red and gold, were seen at their ‘Anand Karaj’ ceremony in visuals on TV and on social media.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chaddha were among the few guests at the low-key wedding which mainly featured family and loved ones.

Raghav Chaddha shared many photos from the wedding, calling Bhagwant Mann his older brother.

“Mann sahab nu lakh lakh vadhaiyan (congratulations to Mann Sahab),” Mr Chaddha tweeted, sharing a photo in which he and Arvind Kejriwal were seen walking with the groom.

Bhagwant Mann, 48, has known Gurpreet Kaur for a few years through family ties. Gurpreet Kaur is also said to have helped him during his election campaign in Punjab.

“Today is a day of immense happiness as my younger brother and Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann ji is getting married and making a fresh start,” Arvind Kejriwal told reporters at the airport.

“His mother’s dream was for him to remarry and settle down. I congratulate him. God bless the couple,” said Raghav Chaddha, who helped plan the wedding.

Mr Mann, a former comedian, divorced six years ago and has two children from his previous marriage. Her children live with their mother in the United States. They came for Mr. Mann’s swearing-in ceremony on March 16.

The wedding menu was a mix of Indian and Italian cuisine; it included Karahi Paneer, Tandoori Kulche, Dal Makhani, Navratan Biryani, Mausami Subzian, Apricot Stuffed Kofta, Lasagna Siciliano and Burrani Raita. A trifle of fresh fruits, moong dal halwa, shahi tukda, angoori rasmalai and dried fruit rabri were also part of the elaborate spread.

The bride, Gurpreet Kaur, completed her MBBS from a private university in Haryana four years ago.

She shared a photo on Twitter this morning and wrote, “Din Shagna Da Chadya (my wedding day has arrived).”

Dr Kaur’s neighbors at Pehowa in Kurukshetra said they found out from the media that she was marrying the Chief Minister.

“We know the bride as Gopi. It was only in the morning that we learned that she was going to marry the Chief Minister of Punjab,” a neighbor was quoted by ANI as saying.
