College overview

The Australian National University (ANU) College of Engineering and Computing (CECS) is a vibrant and diverse community of over three thousand students, staff and visitors. Our College is made up of three schools: the School of Computer Science, the School of Cybernetics and the School of Engineering, supported by the Professional Services Group. Our goal is to bring together the expertise of social, technical, ecological and scientific systems to build a new approach. At the College, we draw on our disciplinary foundations to find and solve problems of global significance. Our people take our traditional world-class expertise and use it in creative and unconventional directions. Through the Reimagine investment, we have the privilege and the responsibility to build a new legacy for the University, the country and even the world. We will fulfill our mission by building a strong community, providing transformative educational experiences, conducting high-impact research, seeking meaningful engagement, and becoming a resilient post-COVID-19 organization. Join us in shaping a new intellectual agenda to reinvent engineering, computing, and the use of technology around the world.

The School of Cybernetics is the first new school established at ANU in the 21st century. The school will build on the foundational work of the Innovation Institute for Autonomy, Agency and Assurance (3Ai), and will also develop systems and design capabilities. Cybernetics is central to the school’s work as a tool that sparks new ways of thinking and new possibilities for the future. We focus on systems as the unit of analysis and driver of action for industries working with complexity and we generate new approaches to shaping the future through and with technology. The school creates programs that combine education, research and engagement, giving staff the opportunity to create new ways of working, to imagine something different, grounded in a diverse and inclusive culture.
