As Delta variant spreads, Miami Valley doctor urges people to get vaccinated – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio
MIAMI VALLEY – As a particularly contagious strain of Covid spreads in Ohio, a Miami Valley doctor is urging people to get vaccinated.
State health officials warn the delta variant could become the dominant strain in the state.
“Unvaccinated people, you’re wide open for infection,” said Dr. Andre Harris, chief medical officer of Atrium Medical Center.
He explained that the delta variant is more contagious than the original Covid strain.

“This particular variant, instead of one person passing it on to two people, we find that one person can pass it on to three or four people,” Dr. Harris said.
He said Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines provide protection against the strain. His concern is with unvaccinated people.
“It’s kinda pointless for us to be in a place where you end up in the hospital, potentially with something that could kill you or cause long term problems, just because you haven’t been vaccinated. “said Dr Harris.
He said that receiving the vaccine even after infection can provide additional protection.
“You can rely on a previous infection, or you can do something that we have tested to show that we have a very high rate of not ending up in the hospital, of not dying,” Dr Harris said.
